Artistic statement:
When I first picked up the camera, it felt right. I felt empowered, that I possessed a third eye to inner truth and expression. I have chosen photography as a means of self-expression, to show my insecurity and fear, my power and strength, my madness and silence, to show my opinion but also reflect my impartiality.
I demonstrate this through colour and with different ways of presenting the images. My installations have included, for example, the suspension of photographs in space, the projection of them onto walls, or the blocking of access to them with a curtain. My preference is for large scale images and also to mix photography with other mediums such as sculpture, drawing and performance.
My work represents freedom to me – freedom of interpretation, freedom to choose and to be hopeless; freedom to see and to be blind; and it gives me the permission to become someone else. In my view, perception is indefinable and as such presents multiple possibilities for interpretation by each individual.
My current research revolves around grotesque figures, e.g. the court jester, the mime, the clown. I am intrigued by people’s behaviour from the masks that each of us put on, willingly or not. In my belief, everyone is a clown. We all pose and pretend and it is unpredictable, endless. To reflect this I embody different characters “in” myself by dressing up and posing as a clown or mime. This is an ongoing project that will be presented in my degree show. Here are some of the samples.
