But the Wildlife Photographer of the year is, above all, a 46 years old competition which awards the most  creative and innovative wildlife pictures providing an insight into the drama, beauty and importance of life on Earth.

There are eleven categories in which every up to 17 years old professional or amateur photographer can enter :
1. Animals in their Environment
2. Behaviour: Birds
3. Behaviour: Mammals
4. Behaviour: All Other Animals
5. Underwater World
6. Animal Portraits
7. in Praise of Plants
8. Urban Wildlife
9. Nature in Black and White
10. Creative Visions of Nature
11. Wild Places

In addition, the competition has four special awards as well as three junior categories. The two overall winners, Veolia Environnement Wildlife Photographer of the Year and Veolia Environnement Young Wildlife Photographer of the Year, will be selected from the competition category winners. All winning and commended images from the 2010 competition will be published in a hardback book and special supplement of BBC Wildlife Magazine.
