The curious effect of Sophy Rickett’s installation To The River in Arnolfini’s darkened ground floor gallery is of being witness to an event whose main attraction is happening elsewhere.  The work consists of video – projected onto fabric screens hanging across three corners of the room – presenting dark images of a group of people waiting at night for the passing of the “Severn Bore” – the curious natural phenomenon of a biennial tidal wave being forced up river by the funnelling effect of sea meeting river at its estuary.  Snippets of conversation from the group are heard emitting from black speakers hanging from the ceiling in the centre of the space.  On first encounter the work is unprepossessing at best with a potential to be tedious in its banality.  However, it
